GeneralitŠ°

This genus includes about two hundred species of perennial herbaceous plants, originating from a large part of the globe; there are about ten species generally cultivated as decorative plants, they come from central-southern America and are evergreen. The Pilea cadierei are dense tufts of rounded or heart-shaped leaves, more or less elongated, dark green in color, with silver-gray or blue zoning, shiny and waxy; for their characteristics they are also known with the name aluminum plant. The leaves are single, carried by long fleshy stems, quite fragile, and have a notched margin; these plants produce apical inflorescences of white, yellow or greenish flowers, which hardly bloom in plants grown in the apartment. Easy to grow, they are often grown in hanging baskets, especially climbing species.

Exposure

In order to have a good development of the aluminum plant, it is good to place the Pilea cadierei in a semi-shaded place or in full shade; they are plants that fear the cold weather, therefore they must be kept in the house or in a temperate greenhouse. The ideal temperature for this variety should never drop below 10 ° C in the winter season, while the ideal climate in the summer should have a temperature around 25 ° C.
